The Best Days Rarely Go to Plan

One thing I've learnt after years of showing visitors around Canterbury and the South Island is that some of the best days don't always follow the original itinerary.

That might sound a bit strange coming from someone who plans tours for a living.

Don't get me wrong – I always start with a plan.

Before a tour, I'll usually have a good idea of what my guests enjoy, what they'd like to see, how much time we have available and what the weather is likely to do. That's all part of creating a great experience.

But New Zealand has a habit of keeping things interesting.

Weather changes. Roads close. A mountain view that looked average in the morning suddenly clears. Sometimes we discover halfway through the day that someone is passionate about photography, history, wildlife or gardens and it makes sense to spend more time exploring those interests.

I've lost count of the number of times a guest has said, "What do you recommend?"

That's usually where the fun begins.

Some of my favourite memories from guiding haven't come from the places that were on the itinerary. They've come from the unexpected moments in between.

A spontaneous stop because the view was too good to drive past.

A local recommendation that turned into the best lunch of the trip.

A conversation that led to a completely different route for the afternoon.

Those moments are difficult to plan for, but they're often the ones people remember most.

I think that's one of the advantages of travelling with a local guide.

You're not locked into a script.

If conditions change, we can adapt. If we discover something you'd enjoy more, we can change direction. If we're having a great time somewhere, we don't need to rush off simply because the schedule says so.

Some of the best feedback I receive isn't about a specific attraction at all.

It's when guests tell me they felt like they got to experience the real New Zealand.

Not just the famous places, but the stories, people, landscapes and little discoveries that make travelling memorable.

At the end of the day, my job isn't really about getting people from A to B.

It's about helping them make the most of their time here.

And sometimes that means knowing when to follow the plan.
